When that curtain call incident happened at Madison Square Garden with Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash, I was just getting my feet wet on the creative side. Let me tell you, when this thing went down it was a HUGE deal to some. Seriously—you would have though a murder was committed. Kayfabe was broken at MSG—and SOMEBODY was going to pay.
Well, it wasn’t going to be Nash and Hall because they were off to WCW; it wasn’t going to be the Heartbreak Kid because he was the Champ at the time, so the only logical choice was the poor slob who just went along for the ride—Triple H.
At the time, there were some who were on a total mission to make Hunter’s life miserable. It was bad. I can vividly remember getting with Hunter at the next TV and telling him—“just suck it up—take whatever they give you—it will all blow over.”
And that is exactly what Triple H did. He weathered the Storm that would have flooded the hope of many. He apologized, kept his head held high, and took everything they threw his way without ever once losing his cool.
Looking back now, the way Triple H handled that situation—I think that was definitely the defining point of his career.
