5 Reasons CM Punk Is Now WWE’s Biggest Competitor - 5

If the whole WWE/CM Punk debacle would have gone down in the days of the Monday Nigh Wars, there’s a distinct chance that Punk may have jumped ship and joined the rival company, much like Bret Hart. But, a decade and a half later, there simply is no other ‘pro wrestling ship’ for Punk to jump to. Heading to TNA at this point would be laughable as the so-called number two American promotion barely seems to have legs to stand on.

And, as for another indie run, it’s likely a been there, done that situation for Punk, who conquered promotions like ROH well before his run at the top of the WWE.

As previously mentioned, WWE has no legitimate competition in terms of pro wrestling and while the surprise signing of Punk would certainly make any company almost infinitely more relevant, it seems doubtful that any company could offer to Punk what he really wants at this point.

To Punk’s credit, however, his own relevancy is much greater than most pro wrestling promotions today. While TNA struggled to find a TV deal after being ousted from Spike, it’s hard to imagine that CM Punk would ever find himself in a similar predicament. In fact, it seems that various cable stations would be line up, bidding to be the home of ‘The CM Punk Show,’ regardless as to the nature of that show.

It could even be said that Punk today is bigger deal than WCW was towards the end of its run and it needs to be remembered that he is currently on an upward trajectory. Perhaps we will eventually look back at this period and refer to it as ‘The Punk Wars.’
