Story: The Undertaker was 12-0 at WrestleMania heading into a “Legend vs. Legend Killer” showdown with Randy Orton at WM21 in 2005. Orton was a heel for most of his first three years, but he did have a face run in there in 2004. When he turned back heel, he had a lot of momentum and the thinking was that he could actually beat Undertaker at WrestleMania to end The Streak.
They had a really competitive match that The Undertaker won clean and it was at that point when people really believed nobody would end The Streak because Orton was the perfect candidate to do it. He was only 25 years old at the time with a bright future ahead of him.
Why People Believe It: Orton was gaining a lot of steam as a “Legend Killer” and since Undertaker was one of WWE’s biggest legends, the feeling was that Orton was going to win.
Should We Believe It: I’m sitting at about 30% in terms of how much I believe it. Considered? Maybe. Scheduled? Not sure. It’s just one of those rumors that has made the rounds on the internet over the years although nobody really knows if it’s true except for those two along with Vince McMahon. It would have made sense at the time since Orton was a star on the rise, but by that point WWE was pushing Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak so it made sense that he got the clean win.
