It was no surprise when Rusev defeated Mark Henry via submission at Night of Champions. Henry really didn’t get a lot offense in aside from hitting the World’s Strongest Slam, which he was unable to capitalize on because Rusev rolled outside the ring. The main story of the match was Rusev driving Henry back first into the steps. Henry ended up selling the back injury for the majority of the match.
They did a good job of building up the Russia vs. USA storyline. Having Lillian Garcia sing the US National Anthem was a nice touch too. It’s just too bad Mark Henry couldn’t get the win. Some fans probably believed it, but it was likely never considered by WWE.
It’s actually become pretty funny to hear JBL’s over the top rants on commentary about whoever beats Rusev is letting down America. If they really didn’t want the guy to win matches they could book him in 10 on 1 handicap matches that he could never win. That’s just WWE commentary style. They always try to be over the top and make everything a big deal even when it’s not.
Look for Rusev to keep on winning, possibly with Big Show as his next challenger although he might be feuding with Bray Wyatt next. Maybe they’ll do Rusev/Henry again like they did Rusev/Swagger for more than one PPV match.
