If you think back to that particular time in The Undertaker’s career, you will remember a lotof talk about whether or not he was getting to the end of his in-ring career. He was 42 going into WrestleMania 23, but his matches were lacking a bit, for one reason or another. Working with another “hoss” in Batista didn’t exactly give people hope for anything great here, especially because a lot of the same questions about in-ring skills were being asked of Batista, too.
Sometimes, the doubts of other people are all you need to motivate yourself. Taker wrestled better than he had in years here, and Batista had his best match to date. You could tell, almost from the start, that they were both inspired. John Cena VS Shawn Michaels was the main event of the night, and that was getting the most attention, but even the Hair VS Hair battle between Bobby Lashley and Umaga was getting more press and publicity. That had to upset both men, especially with Taker’s streak and Batista’s World Title on the line, and they went out to steal the show. Adding even more fuel to their fire is the fact that the match went on fourth during the show, after the United States Title match between Chris Benoit and MVP, and before the eight-man ECW tag match.
The crowd got into the match, and that only seemed to motivate both men even further. They worked a nice “big man” power match. Batista had people thinking he would end Taker’s undefeated streak. Taker had people believing he would take the World Title. They set out to steal the show, and that’s exactly what they did.
