One thing about matches involving either Vince or Shane McMahon is that they’re almost always far more entertaining than they have any right to be. Neither one of them is a truly trained professional wrestler, of course, but that never mattered much. Shane was, essentially, a stunt man, willing to perform big spots to get over. Vince was a master storyteller, able to connect with live crowds better than just about any other wrestler could ever dream of doing. Putting the two of them against each other, and at WrestleMania, no less, was an interesting move. They were both entertaining, but without an actual wrestler to help them out, fans wondered just what they would be capable of.
On a night full of good-to-great matches, Vince vs Shane really stands out at WrestleMania 17. They had the fans in attendance eating out of the palms of their hands from start to finish. Yes, the match was overbooked to all hell, with appearances and/or interference from Special Guest Referee Mick Foley, Trish Stratus, Stephanie McMahon, Zombie Linda McMahon, and Regular Linda McMahon. Yes, the entire back story to the match was convoluted, and quite silly at times. None of that mattered, though, in the overall scheme of things. Those two went out there and told a great story.
The fans in attendance were so into what was going on that they gave Linda McMahon a monster face pop for standing up (she had been in a wheelchair in the storylines, in a catatonic state after suffering a breakdown over her marital issues). The same Linda McMahon that everyone is so mad at because she ran for political office, and those folks feel WWE had to tone its product down because of it. She might as well have been Steve Austin for that particular moment. It just added to the drama of the Father vs Son storyline, and we all enjoyed it.
