11. Selling Kids A Tagline About Masturbation

John Cena is marketed to kids. They find him fun and heroic, so they copy all of his mannerisms and catchphrases. WWE sell him in the same way that Disney sell Mickey Mouse, a central figure who fronts the franchise.

Which makes it quite the scandal that one of Cena’s key catchphrases is about masturbation. The ‘five knuckle shuffle’ is loved by kids, but it actually means something very different from a flying fist.

The Urban Dictionary says –

five knuckle shuffle, The act of male masturbation. See also w***, spanking the monkey. “Johnny’s mother caught him in the middle of a five knuckle shuffle.”

It isn’t just this move. The STFU stands for “Shut the f**k up” and the FU was an obvious insult. The problem is, when WWE gave Cena those terms, it was in a different era. The company wasn’t PG and the references were suited to the teenage audience.

Now, in 2014, WWE is firmly PG. The company changed the FU to AA and also dropped the STFU term. However, the wholly inappropriate masturbation reference is still being used. Kids are thinking it is cool to see a five knuckle shuffle.
