6. Mexican Sacrilege

One of Del Rio’s biggest controversies was his mere signing with WWE. You need to understand something about Mexican wrestling, these people are passionate fans, it’s a different culture and their pro wrestlers are national heroes. Del Rio in particular was a big main event star, the Mexican equivalent of a Cena or Punk. Hence when he jumped to WWE, it was a seismic event, as big as when say Bret jumped to WCW in 1997. Things like this just weren’t supposed to happen. The Mexican people were not at all happy.
What made it all the more sacrilegious was that Del Rio performed under a mask. He was known as Dos Caras Jr, representing honour and tradition. When he ended up abandoning that mask, he got a lot of criticism. It wasn’t heat, it was genuine revulsion. People felt like he had sold the Caras legacy out. The vaunted tradition of the mask was sold down the river for a spot in the commercial glitz of USA’s wrestling pantomime. Mexico was not happy.
