WWE Are Short On Stars

CM Punk’s WWE return may be less about his own motivation and more
about WWE’s growing need for main event stars. They have John Cena who
will always be reliable for week in week out drawing, but beyond that,
the company is desperately short of interesting characters. Sure,
they’re betting on Roman Reigns for the future, but that gamble isn’t
necessarily going to pay for. Daniel Bryan might have made a CM Punk
like impact, but his injury and weak booking may never see him recover
his standing. As for falling back on Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker,
they are part timers who could retire at any time. It isn’t good
business to be so reliant on so little talent.
Punk could correct all of that. He is a proven number two guy, a man
who can draw money. Maybe that’s why he left, he figured WWE would
quickly learn to appreciate him if he wasn’t there tugging the business
along. Give it a few months and WWE might realise that too, offering to
take him back on an improved spot and improved money. They’re desperate
to make the WWE Network sell more subscriptions, CM Punk could be the
welcome boon they need come the Autumn rot months.
