10 Biggest WWE Rematches That Never Happened
2. Daniel Bryan Vs. John Cena – SummerSlam 2013
Why There Was No Rematch: Both guys are faces and injuries became a factor with Daniel Bryan missing significant time in 2014 and 2015.
John Cena was the WWE Champion going into SummerSlam 2013 and he was given the option of choosing his opponent for the big event. He went with Daniel Bryan even though they are both babyfaces. It was the right choice because Bryan was the most popular wrestler in the company at the time.
Prior to the match, it was known among online fans that Cena had a torn biceps that needed surgery. The belief at the time was that he’d be out for about four months. It ended up being only two months because he’s a freak when it comes to healing from injuries, but they had to get the title off Cena.
Bryan got the clean win in a very good match that saw Triple H acting as the special referee. The crowd in Los Angeles went wild as Bryan won the WWE Title for the first time – he had already been World Champion before. It was one of those moments where fans were genuinely happy for the guy because they know how hard he worked to get there.
They never had a match after that. Bryan was onto a feud with Randy Orton and Triple H while Cena feuded with Alberto Del Rio, then Orton and Bray Wyatt. Since Bryan was injured for most of 2014 as well as a lot of this year, WWE never got around to booking the match again.
