At Extreme Rules 2012, John Cena contested an epic main event against the returning Brock Lesnar. This was a really great match, different to any other WWE match you’ll have seen. It was a straight up brawl. Lesnar brought some of his MMA game and Cena was throwing and taking stiff shots.

That’s when the scandal comes in. Cena got colour, he deliberately allowed Brock to cut him open hardway. The blood started to pour, which was something we hadn’t seen in the WWE for a long time.

That’s because blood is banned in WWE. There’s infection fears and it isn’t considered PG for advertisers. Cena and Brock decided to ignore those rules. They knew that they were bigger than the fine and decided to do the blood. They wanted to make the contest as impactful as possible – and you’d have to say it succeeded.

But really, what message does it send when the standard-bearer of the company is so disregarding of the rules?
