The Undertaker’s 10 Most Notorious Urban Legends-2

2. The Undefeated Streak At WrestleMania Was Not Planned

Story: The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania was the greatest thing about his character for a very long time. Now that he’s 21-1 the mystique of The Streak is gone, but when it was being built up it was really something that the fans could sink their teeth into and focus on whenever they saw him. It also was accentuated because he barely wrestled in the last few years aside from matches at WrestleMania.
His first WrestleMania win was over Jimmy Snuka at WM8 in 1992. After that he rolled through the likes of Jake Roberts, Giant Gonzalez (by DQ), King Kong Bundy, Diesel and so on.
When The Undertaker beat Triple H at WrestleMania 17, Jim Ross mentioned that Taker was a stellar 9-0 at the event. One year later at WrestleMania 18 (his last time as a heel at WM), Taker acknowledged The Streak by counting the wins on his hands and flashing the “10″ sign to the crowd. Three years after that at WrestleMania 21 against Randy Orton, they really started to push The Streak as he became 13-0. It just kept growing from there.
Since WWE promoted The Streak so much, there’s a feeling that they had it planned from the beginning. Nobody really knows other than Vince McMahon and The Undertaker himself.
Why People Believe It: It’s hard to plan something that far advance. They can try to come up with stuff like that and hope it comes true, but there’s no way of knowing that it will happen. Most wrestling companies would never try to plan something like that.
Should We Believe It: Yes. It seems unlikely that they could plan something like The Streak all the way back in 1990 and have it continue until 2013. There’s no guarantee that you’re going to have a main event level performer last 23 years. In fact, most people would bet against that kind of thing ever happening.
People close to Vince McMahon haven’t really spoken about it because they either still work there or don’t have enough info about it. It’s one of those things that you either believe or you don’t. It’s great that it happened, but it’s also something that WWE lucked into and then made the most of it once they realized they had something special.
