As part of the national expansion, the WWF bought promotions and took over their TV slots. Most infamously, Vince McMahon secretly bought majority ownership of Georgia Championship Wrestling to get their TV deal with TBS. While he offered jobs to everyone in the territory, only a handful took him up, and the only one that made a lasting impact was Nikolai Volkoff. One of them was the area’s biggest legends, Mr. Wrestling II, also came in. It could be argued it was a risky move, as he was a terrible fit for the WWF, but he was at the end of his career. He made some appearances on the TBS show and televised house shows, even having good matches in the process. While the mask hid his age to a degree, he wasn’t in the shape most of the WWF wrestlers were. He left in 1985 and finished out his active career in Georgia independent promotions.
