3. Diamond Dallas Page Vs Goldberg (Halloween Havoc 1998)
As popular as Goldberg was in his prime, you would never mistake him for a Chris Benoit or a Dean Malenko in the ring. It wasn’t what he was there for, and it wasn’t what he was good at. Diamond Dallas Page was an underrated in-ring performer, but he wasn’t exactly an elite worker, either. Going into the 1998 Halloween Havoc, fans didn’t know what to expect, especially with Goldberg’s undefeated streak still going on. He had to lose at some point, didn’t he?
While it wasn’t the longest pay-per-view main event ever (10:29 in length, good for fourth longest match of the night), they packed a lot into it. DDP tried to use more mat wrestling than he would normally use, while Goldberg used the power offense that he had perfected. The key to this match, however, was Goldberg actually selling things. During his undefeated streak, he rarely had to sell for any of his opponents, and when he did, it was only temporarily. In this match, he sold, and he sold well. It added to the psychology of the match, making it that much better. It’s as if someone came to him before the match and offered him a bigger contract if he would just switch things up a bit. In one memorable spot, Goldberg lifted DDP up for the Jackhammer, but his injured arm couldn’t handle it, so DDP was able to drop out and reverse it into a Diamond Cutter that had everyone watching thinking that he just ended the streak.
Goldberg would end up winning, but this match was not only his best performance, it was the match that put DDP on the map as a top-tier talent. A few months later, DDP would win the first of his three WCW World Titles, but they wouldn’t have been possible without him opening the eyes of WCW fans and management alike on that one October night.
