The Undertaker’s 10 Most Notorious Urban Legends-1
1. He Threatened Shawn Michaels At WrestleMania 14
Story: Shawn Michaels was the heel WWE Champion in 1998 heading into WrestleMania 14 against the red hot babyface star on the rise Steve Austin. Everybody knew that he was going to drop the WWE Title to Austin just like we have seen so many times in wrestling history with the babyface winning to end the show. A year earlier it was Undertaker in that spot while two years before that it was Michaels.
It was also a time in Shawn’s career where he wasn’t the most well liked guy in WWE. A year earlier he gave up the WWE Title due to “losing his smile” and a knee injury even though he was wrestling three months later looking like nothing was wrong. Then there was Survivor Series 1997 with him taking part in the screwjob of Bret Hart.
Due to all of the questionable behavior displayed Michaels, The Undertaker apparently noticed him in the locker room and started taping up his fists as a way to intimidate Michaels. The suggestion was that if Shawn didn’t do what was best for business he would have to deal with an angry Undertaker.
There were no problems that night. Michaels worked through his back injury that caused him to miss four years and he put over Austin clean in the middle of the ring like he was supposed to.
Why People Believe It: There are a lot of people that have told this story although how many of them were really there? It’s believable because Undertaker was the most respected guy in WWE’s locker room and Michaels had a bad rep at that point in his career. The story fit the personalities of the two legends.
Should We Believe It: Yes. For this one we even have video proof of Undertaker talking about. Go to 5:00 in this clip:
Two quotes: 1) ” “It was questionable whether Shawn Michaels was going to do the right thing or not.” 2) “I’ll just put it this way. If it hadn’t have been done the way it was done, it would have been a very long night for Shawn Michaels.”
The whole “tapes fists to scare HBK” story seems legit. While Michaels has never said that’s exactly what happened, he has hinted that people were worried about what he might do at the time because of all the trouble he had caused in his career. Most likely Michaels would have done the right thing without those threats by Undertaker. At least we hope so.
