7. Viewer Discretion Is Advised – 1996
Prior to the arrival of Sunny in 1995, the women of World Wrestling Entertainment were used as traditional valets or managers. They seconded male Superstars and, though they gained fan followings, never overshadowed their charge. Sunny completely altered the perceptions fans had of female performers by emerging as a star on par with the top male talents in the industry. She was sexy, beautiful, entertaining and able to hold her own on the mic and in front of the camera. It is because of those elements that Vince McMahon discovered his first real breakout female star and wasted little time marketing and merchandising her. Then, as the company began to inch ever-so-slightly away from the family-friendly product WWE had promoted for over a decade, she took center stage in several viewer discretion intros.
Sunny was engaged in several suggestive scenarios, including bubble baths and beach bikini photo shoots, as she warned fans of an edgier product than they may be accustomed to. Her sex appeal was played up significantly and the men watching at home were more-than appreciative. The bumpers would routinely air throughout 1996 before the rise of Sable as WWE’s number one sexy symbol unjustly pushed Sunny to the background.
